Towne's Harvest Community Supported Agriculture
Important Documents
About the Program
Friends of Local Foods was formed in the fall of 2006 to bring concerned students, faculty, and community members together to raise awareness and create programs, classes and conduct research related to local food systems and food quality.
This summer we have teamed up with MSU and the Gallatin Valley Food Bank to support a 2 acre diversified vegetable farm. This farm will produce vegetables and be the start of a larger project that promotes community building and individual empowerment. Our goal is that this farm will be seen as a place of education for the entire Bozeman community. It will promote learning about food production and the value of eating and supporting local foods. Cooking and food preservation classes will be offered throughout the summer.
MSU folks and community members are very welcome to visit and volunteer at the garden. Volunteers will be rewarded for their efforts by stress reduction through physical work, joyful camaraderie and free vegetables. Email us to be notified of volunteer dates and times.
Why Towne’s Harvest?
The name of the garden connects the history of the land to the present. Towne is the surname of one of five farmers who used to own land which was eventually deeded to MSU. The land where the Horticulture Farm and the Towne’s Harvest Garden is located has been nicknamed Towne’s farm for several decades. The piece of land which became the garden actually belonged to E. Broox and the Ella Martin Farm. It was deeded to MSU in 1909.
As a student group and a part of MSU, we will continue to be good stewards of that farm so that future generations of Montanans can grow food on this land.
About CSA
CSA is an acronym for Community Supported Agriculture. CSAs are vegetable subscriptions which directly support a farmer or a farming group in the community. Community members pay a set amount for a season’s worth of produce, and then receive a bag of vegetables each week. CSAs are a great way to build relationships with your produce growers: you know exactly where your food is coming from and you will see how it is grown. In this case, your purchase of a CSA share will also support student initiative and interest in local and sustainable food by funding our group’s garden project.
We have a 13 week CSA program from June 24 to September 23 for $425.
This box will feed 4 people. There are 55 memberships available to the
public and 25 for the Food Bank for a total of 80 memberships. We are
growing numerous types of organic produce including peppers, potatoes, carrots,
cilantro, basil, parsley, onions, tomatoes, green beans, peas,
broccoli, salad mix and more!
